At International Development Questions in Parliament today Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, questioned the government on the issue of rainforest preservation. Highlighting the pledge of $1 billion by the Norwegian government to a Brazilian rainforest protection scheme, Mr Mulholland asked what the UK government would do to help Brazil to implement this scheme.
"It is vital at this time of global economic problems that we do not forget our commitment to the environment
"It is essential for us to preserve the world's rainforests, the lungs of the world, as once lost they can never be replaced.
"We need to protect the environment to safeguard our children's economic future as the economic cost of a damage environment could be catastrophic"
