The government has this week announced plans to oblige pubs, bars and restaurants to offer customers wine in small (125ml) glasses, a move which follows over a year of campaigning for such measures by Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West.
Greg introduced a Private Member's Bill in January 2008 which proposed requiring pubs, bars and restaurants to offer 125ml glasses of wine alongside larger measures. He also met with the Home Secretary in October 2008 to push for action on the issue.
Greg welcomed the announcement saying:
"I am very pleased that the government has finally taken up my suggestion to ensure that customers are able to have a small glass of wine if they choose. In recent years, an increasing number of pubs, bars and restaurants have eliminated the 125ml glass of wine thus obliging customers to take a larger glass of either 175ml or 250ml.
Guaranteeing that drinking establishments offer the option of a small glass of wine increases customer choice and can encourage responsible drinking"
