Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has today written to party leaders in the Commons demanding reforms to the allowances system. The letter highlighted how recent stories on MP allowance abuses have brought Parliament into disrepute.
Commenting, Greg said;
"The stories in the press about misuse of allowances call into question the integrity of the entire system.
It is unsurprising that election turnout levels are low when politics and politicians are marred by accusations of greed and malpractice.
We urgently need reforms to regain some credibility in Parliament. I am calling on the Government to consider my reform proposals to put a stop to this appalling state of affairs".
Greg has been active in his criticisms of the allowance system. He has tabled Early Day Motions on this topic and, earlier this week, called for the resignation of the Home Secretary.
