Commenting on the report last Thursday by the Office For Fair Access (OFFA) which revealed that at least 12,000 university students from the lowest income group did not receive a bursary in the last academic year, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland said:
"Too many students are still not receiving the financial support available to them.
Ministers and Universities need to take action to simplify the current system which is far too complex and is leaving many young people unsure about exactly what extra money they are entitled to and how to go about claiming it.
There is still a huge variation across universities in the amount of money from tuition fees used to fund bursaries and outreach work.
We need a national bursary system which would distribute money fairly and mean that the amount of help students receive is not dependent on which university they attend."
