Prime Minister Gordon Brown suffered a humiliating defeat today as MP's voted 267 - 246 in favour of a Liberal Democrat motion that would grant rights of residence in the United Kingdom to all Ghurkha's
Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland hailed the result of the commons vote as a "moral victory" for the Ghurkha's and their supporters.
The Government had put forward proposals which offered residency to Ghurkha's based on length of service and other criteria such as whether they had been injured in battle opponents to the Government's plans suggested that this would only help a very small number of Ghurkhas.
Commenting, Greg said;
"The Government proposals did not go anywhere near far enough and would have left many Ghurkha's out in the cold. This is only the second time in eleven years that this Government has been defeated which shows the weight of opinion over this matter.
These men fought bravely for this country and the least they deserve is the right to residency. If you are willing to die for this country then quite frankly you should have the right to live here.
Now that their plans have been defeated I hope that the Government will at last seize this opportunity to approach this issue seriously and give the Ghurkha's the rights they deserve."
