Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Lib Dem Heath Spokesman, criticised Strategic Health Authorities in a debate this week, arguing that it is time for Strategic Health Authorities to be abolished.
Greg contributed to an opposition day debate on the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, where it was found that as many as 1,200 patients died unnecessarily due to staff shortages and systemic failures.
Greg said;
"The Mid Staffordshire case shows that Strategic Health Authorities are an unnecessary, costly and ineffective tier of the NHS and should be abolished.
This case shows a serious breakdown in the Strategic Health Authorities ability to oversee health services. The fact that such an appalling and long-term failure was not detected and prevented shows how dire the situation has become.
At best Strategic Health Authorities act as the local mouthpiece of the Secretary of State, concerning themselves with rubberstamping and box ticking. They do very little to challenge and improve the system and never take the lead.
At a time when the NHS is under huge financial pressure, the best thing we can do is abolish this wasteful level of politically motivated bureaucracy."
