The 126 Mile Challenge team completed the final leg of their challenge this weekend, walking the Wessex 100 Mile walk. The three challengers, Greg Mulholland MP, Councillor Ryk Downes and Martin Rivett all finished the challenge in less than the 48 hours allowed.
Greg completed the walk in 38 hours and 24 minutes, Ryk in 44 hours and 8 minutes and Martin in 47 hours and 15 minutes.
The challengers previously ran the Belfast Marathon and finishing the Wessex 100 marks the successful completion of the challenge which was launched to raise money for three local charities: Kidz in Kampz, Wheatfields Hospice and the Special Equipment Fund for Wharfedale Hospital.
All three paid tribute to those who had supported them during the challenge and thanked the hundreds of people who have donated money so far. They were especially helped by the "126 Mile Partners" who have contributed logistical support and equipment. These were: Leeds Metropolitan University, Up and Running, Jet2.com, Jaguar, Bulldog Sports.
The team want to raise as much money as possible for charity and are still hoping to secure last minute sponsorship from any interested parties. Anybody who is interested in sponsoring the trio can find more details on their website www.126milechallenge.co.uk
Greg said:
"It was gruelling at times but the support staff did an excellent job and I would like to thank them.
"I would also like to thank all the people who have kindly donated money to the three very worthy causes. It is for these causes that we have been able to keep going when things were getting tough.
Ryk Downes:
"The Wessex 100 is a challenging event and crossing the finishing line was a real buzz. It is an amazing feeling to know you have completed what is a real test of endurance."
Martin Rivett:
"After all the effort we put into the challenge, not to mention my poor sore feet, we want to make sure it was worth it by raising a good amount for our three excellent charities. Any last minute sponsorship would be very much appreciated!"
