Commenting on the speculation that Jacqui Smith is to resign as Home Secretary, Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, said:
"The Home Secretary should have resigned weeks ago when expense revelations made it impossible for her to carry on in this vitally important job.
"Once again this is an example of a failure of leadership by Gordon Brown who, if he meant what he said about cleaning up politics, would have already kicked out ministers who have abused the expenses system.
"The Government is falling apart and Gordon Brown must take responsibility for this."
Greg has been one of the leading voices in Parliament calling for reform of MPs allowances. He has repeatedly called for Ministers abusing the expenses system to be sacked and he demanded the resignation of the Home Secretary back in March when it was first revealed that she had designated a room in her sister's house as her main home, allowing her to spend her second home allowance on her family home in the West Midlands.
