Greg Mulholland MP, MP for Leeds North West today backed a motion of no confidence in the Government calling for the dissolution of Parliament which would lead to an immediate general election.
Greg spoke in the debate and pointed out that in many areas of the country, where MPs who have abused the expenses system have been forced to retire at the next election, that they effectively don't have representation and that it was wrong that they should remain in the job and continue to take the salary and be entitled to a pay-out. With it being costly to have so many by-elections, the only solution is for a general election;
"People are rightly outraged that some MPs who have been abusing the expenses system continue to be MPs, collect their salary and be eligible for a pay-out. In these areas, people effectively have no MP as their reputation has been so damaged to make it impossible for them to do their job and represent their area.
It would be costly to have so many by-elections, but these people should be made to stand down now and the only way it seems this will happen is if Parliament is dissolved.
The Government has lost its authority and is no longer able to lead the country. The Prime Minister should face up to this and allow the people to decide who their MPs are and who should run the country.
It is time that Gordon Brown stopped acting only in his interests and the interests of the Labour Party and started acting in the interest of the British people. If he did, he wood have the courage to call a general election."
