MULHOLLAND HELPS TO LAUNCH NEW SCOUT HUT APPEAL

June 22, 2009 1:41 AM

gregscoutsGreg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West helped to launch a new appeal to help refurbish the 2nd Otley Scout troop's scout hut. Greg met cubs and scouts, and talked to fundraisers who are aiming to raise £125,000 to refurbish the hut.

At present there are outside toilets which are inadequate for an organisation with mixed membership, and also for community groups that use the Scout hut with elderly members. The plan will incorporate new toilet facilities into the main building and also make provision for a disabled toilet. The plans also provide for an enlarged kitchen that will double up as a craft area, with appropriate facilities for use by a number of community groups.

The extension to the existing meeting hall will have a renewable energy heating system and improvements to the heating system within the main meeting hall will be made at the same time. This will be achieved through a new energy efficient system incorporating solar powered heating. The use of this energy source within the building will be part of a focus on minimising carbon emissions, creating a culture of environmental awareness amongst users of the Scout Headquarters.

Greg said;

"This is a great scheme which I hope the local community will really get behind. The plans look really fantastic and which when complete will help not only the scout group but also the local community. The fundraisers are already doing a great job and have raised £25,000 towards their target."

Novita Williamson representing the Scouts added;

"The Scout hut is in a poor state of repair and needs bringing into the 21st century. We are very pleased to have in the last month received planning permission, which gives us 3 years in which to get the project completed. The fundraising team is grateful for any offers of help and ideas from local people that could help towards raising funds. At the moment we are seeking funding from sources such as the National Lottery Commission, Biffa Award, Green Leeds Limited, local authorities and development agencies. If you want to help us then please get in touch at fundraising@2ndotleyscouts.org.uk."

Greg added;

"It was great to meet the Scouts, their enthusiasm was infectious and it will be fantastic for them to have this new modern facility."
