Greg Mulholland the Liberal Democrat shadow health spokesperson and MP for Leeds North West spoke in a debate last week on the topic of caring for the elderly and accused the government of twelve years of empty rhetoric on the issue.
Commenting after the debate Greg said;
"Twelve years after Tony Blair famously said that he didn't want to live in a county where older people had to sell their houses to afford care, the sad reality is that vast numbers of pensioners are still in that desperate position.
The sad reality is that in 21st century Britain 2.5 million pensioners are still living in poverty and that is a statistic the Government should be deeply ashamed of.
The Government is now saying that we need yet another discussion on care, I argued that what we actually need are firm proposals that will make a difference to older people now.
The Conservatives used this debate to attack the Government proposals, the fact is however, that the Tories have put forward absolutely none of their own policies on this issue and the problem of pensioner poverty was just as acute when they were in power.
The Liberal Democrats have stood firmly by our policy of the Universal Care Guarantee whilst the other parties propose discussions and attack each other, that is something I am very proud of."
