Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West has written to Lord Mandelson to express his concerns about the limit which has been placed on the number of students that have been advancing to degree level.
Mr Mulholland has suggested that by placing a cap on the number of higher education places available to aspiring students the Government has put less popular science degrees in jeopardy.
Commenting Greg said:
"The Government has said that it wants 40% of adults in the United Kingdom to have a university degree by 2020 but it has only increased the number of available places by 3000, which is nowhere near enough to meet demand.
This puts at risk the less popular but no less important courses such as the bio-science courses offered at the University of Leeds. If these courses were to be ceased to be offered it would be bad for the city as a whole and would cost a lot of jobs.
I have asked the Secretary of State to remove any so called "cap" on the number of higher education places which are crippling our educational institutions."
