Yesterday's report by Network Rail on the future of high speed rail in the United Kingdom rejected the Conservative proposal for Leeds to be connected to the High Speed Rail network by a Trans-Pennine link with Manchester.
The report said that such a link would be counter productive as the potential journey time would offer little saving compared to the best now achievable via the East Coast Main Line. The Chief Executive of Network Rail, Ian Iain Coucher, said serving Leeds via Manchester would also damage the case for building a second high speed corridor from London to Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.
Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West and a leading campaigner for a high speed rail directly between Yorkshire and London commented:
"One positive aspect of yesterday's report is that it dismisses, once and for all, the idea of connecting Yorkshire to the high speed rail network through a link with Manchester.
The Conservative proposals were all hot air, yet another promise they have no intention of honouring should they win the next election. The Network Rail report clearly shows that their proposal was ill thought out and would be a complete waste of time.
It is time the Conservatives stopped thinking about Yorkshire as nothing more than an adjunct to Manchester. We clearly need our own line, the economic benefits that this would bring to our region are clear for all to see."
