Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West has reacted to yesterday's Audit Commission report, which claims that councils are failing to focus on renovating existing social housing due to Government pressure from Local Area Agreements.
Greg said:
"Thousands of social homes are lying empty in a state of disrepair and all the while the waiting lists for social housing are growing.
Labour has let down low income families. The waiting lists are now as high as 1.8 million families, it is defensible that more is not being done to make these empty social home habitable.
The Treasury has raided council tenants' rent and the Decent Homes budget, denying councils the money they desperately need to improve local housing."
