Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West has welcomed news that local charity "Behind Closed Doors" will be allocated funding by Leeds City Council.
The charity, for victims of domestic violence, had been struggling to raise the necessary level of funding for it to continue operating and there is not a similar charity in the north west of Leeds
Statistics show that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives and that 2 to 3 women will be murdered a week by a partner or former partner in England and Wales.
Last year Behind Closed Doors supported 500 women and Greg has been leading the campaign to keep the charity open and available to victims of domestic abuse in Leeds North West,
Commenting Greg Said:
"The charity has always been close to my heart and I have spoken about it in parliament previously, so as far as I was concerned, for behind Closed Doors to shut down due to lack of funding was not an option.
"It is great news that the Council look like they are going to come forward to ensure the future of this extremely important service, and congratulations must be given to all those involved in the campaign to save Behind Closed Doors when it seemed destined to close.
"I would like to stress however it remains essential that the council puts in place a long term funding strategy to ensure that we do not find ourselves in the same position again.
"If Behind Closed Doors were to close then the council would be obliged to provide this important service themselves, it is therefore in everybody's interest that the long term future of behind closed doors is assured."
