Greg Mulholland, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West and member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Small Shops, has welcomed the Competition Commission's recommendations to introduce a competition test in planning decisions for large retailers.
The recommendations prevent store openings by chains that already have a strong presence in a local area by introducing a competition test in planning decisions on larger grocery stores.
Commenting, Greg Said:
"I am delighted that the Competition Commission has taken a firm stance to help give local businesses a real say in planning applications.
"Local shops play a vital role in the vibrancy of the community, bringing both economic benefits and neighbourhood cohesion.
"We must ensure local shops have adequate protection to reflect their unique place in society."
