Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Health has welcomed the news that independent sector treatment centres will now be subject to further safety checks carried out by the Care Quality Commission.
Dr John Hubley, a constituent of Greg's, bled to death during what should have been a routine gall bladder operation at the Eccleshill Independent Sector Treatment Centre in Bradford.
The coroner in Dr Hubley's case found he died as a result of "misadventure aggravated by neglect".
Greg commented:
"This announcement is long overdue; the Government have been very reluctant to subject ISTCs to the same level of scrutiny as NHS hospitals.
"It shows how obsessed this Government are with targets; that they will continue to use ISTCs to reduce waiting list times despite real concerns about the safety at these facilities.
"Dr Hubley's death was a tragic waste made all the more tragic when you realise it was infinitely avoidable. His widow has never been satisfied with the appalling way that she was treated by the NHS following her fiancées death."
