Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group has reacted to the news that his constituent, management consultant and mother Jackie Slater was refused service at a local Morrisons supermarket.
The checkout assistant demanded to see Ms Slater's I.D before allowing her to buy two bottles of wine, accusing Ms Slater of buying wine for her daughter who was helping her with her shopping bags.
Greg Commented:
"This is simply absurd and Morrison's should be ashamed of themselves. Whoever thinks this policy will do anything do stop antisocial drinking by kids is in cloud cuckoo land.
"Jackie is in her fifties, and demanding ID from her is a step too far.
"Like all the supermarkets, if Morrison's were serious about helping tackle binge drinking, they would stop selling some alcohol at rock bottom prices.
"We need a more mature and sensible approach to alcohol in general and refusing a mum a bottle of wine with the weekly shop because she has her 17 year old daughter with her is ridiculous.
"Morrison's need to think this policy through again and replace it with one which employs a little more commonsense."
