Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Health has reacted to Gordon Brown's conference speech.
Greg responded to the speech:
"The Prime Minister seems to have grasped this opportunity to make a number of sensational and ill thought through proposals about social care.
"He mentions the post code lottery; that would be the very same post code lottery that has been in existence throughout Labour's time in power.
"The way to end the post code lottery is not to take the power away from local authorities and place it in the hands of some out of touch centralised organisation but to offer those who need care standard minimum entitlements.
"I have been leading efforts to get older people a fairer deal from this Government and they have ignored the pleas of those who have stood to lose their savings time and time again.
"The first job that should face the Prime Minister's National Care Service should be to immediately end the practice of people going into residential care from having to sell their houses to be able to afford it.
"I have seen nothing in the Prime Minister's speech today that suggests that he has any idea how to honour Tony Blair's promise during his first conference speech as Prime Minister to end the practice of people having to sell their homes to afford care."
