Greg Mulholland, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, today wrote to the Housing Minister to question what efforts are being made to assist students with problems with housing caused by the delays in the processing of applications for student loans.
The Student Loans Company has as many as 170,000 applications outstanding. Students starting their courses need to pay for housing, which may be difficult if they have not received their loans.
Commenting, Greg said:
"Students and parents have every reason to be worried about how they will be able to pay for housing. My fear is that students will be unable to start their course simply because they can't pay for their accommodation.
"This is not the first time the Student Loan Company has failed to process applications in time - back in 2004 we saw similar delays, indicative of system which is simply not fit for purpose.
"I hope all landlords in Leeds and across the county who provide student accommodation will show understanding to students and parents who have been hit by this chaos."
