Greg Mulholland MP spoke recently of his concerns of the effect of climate change at a CAFOD event in his constituency of Leeds North West.
Greg warned his audience that a mere six days before the event the World Bank reported that adapting to impacts of climate change will cost £47-63bn per year in the developing world from 2010, which is roughly same amount that is given in aid to developing countries.
Greg has been a long standing supporter of Cafod and also mentioned their climate justice campaign and has voiced support for "The Wave" on the 5th December, a human wave of tens of thousands of people flowing through London in support for climate justice.
Commenting Greg said:
"Climate Change impoverishes already poor nations.
"The World Bank has recently estimated that the cost to Africa of climate change will be 4% of GDP and to India, 5%. Even if environmental costs were distributed equally to every person on earth, developing countries would still bear 80% of the burden, because they account for 80% of world population. As it is, they bear an even greater share, though their citizens' carbon footprints are much smaller.
"By 2030 climate change may expose 90m more people to malaria in Africa alone.
"We must act and act quickly to protect the world's poorest nations from the effects of climate change, I was delighted to have been given this opportunity by Cafod to raise this important matter."
