Mulholland demands Minister makes a statement on disappearing rail carriages

October 29, 2009 11:28 PM

Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West today demanded that the Minister for Transport come into the House of Commons and explain why additional rail carriages were not now being introduced to the Leeds rail network.

Greg had previously written to the minister for Transport Chris Mole asking why the Government had reneged on the number of carriages it planned to introduce to the Leeds rail network to tackle congestion and was astonished with the reply.

Greg Said:

"In his response to my letter on this issue the Under Secretary of State informed me that our carriages had been scrapped because of the electrification of the line between Manchester and Liverpool.

"I found this response frankly unbelievable, why should we be paying for the electrification of Manchester's line?

"Our trains are already hugely overcrowded and I think the Minister should have the courage to come to the House of Commons and explain to the people of Yorkshire why they always get such a rough deal when it comes to transport spending.

"Why should we suffer just because the Manchester line is being electrified?"

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
