Mulholland Welcomes Expenses Announcement

February 4, 2010 12:26 PM

Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West and leading campaigner on the issue of reforming MP's expenses has today welcomed the news that up to half of all MPs will have to repay some expenses having been found to abuse the system.

Greg had called for reform of the system for over three years, well before the scandal broke and was one of the MPs most vocal in demanding MPs who were found to have broken the rules were forced to step down.

Greg was also one of the few MPs who signed the motion of no confidence in the Speaker, Michael Martin, and was found to not have anything to pay back by Sir Thomas Legg.

Commenting Greg said:

"It is right that all MPs expense claims are public, they always should have been. What we need now is to get a sensible, transparent system in place so the public can have confidence that this sort of thing that has so damaged politics can never happen again.

"It remains wrong that some MPs who have seriously abused the system are still in their jobs, they're constituents should have the right to get rid of them in these circumstances."

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
