Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West has called on the people of Leeds to boycott Carlsberg lager after their announcement today that Tetley's beer will no longer be brewed in Leeds.
An announcement made today by Tetley's parent company Carlsberg UK said that Tetley's Cask Ale will move from Leeds to Wolverhampton under a contract with Marstons. Under a different contract Tetley's Smoothflow will be brewed at Molson Coors brewery in Tadcaster.
Commenting, Greg said:
"This is an appalling decision by Carlsberg which unnecessarily brings to end more than 180 years of history.
"It's a decision made purely in the interests of corporate greed with no regard for Tetley's heritage as a famous Leeds beer.
"I am calling on the good people of Leeds to show how they feel about this by boycotting Carlsberg lager. They have betrayed Tetley's and Leeds and especially the 170 people who will lose their jobs having given service to the city.
"The future for brewing in Leeds is now the fantastic small breweries who are committed to the area including the excellent Leeds Brewery and the exciting new WharfeBank brewery in Pool."
