Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group and fellow team mates have launched the new Political Animals rugby league team and club in Westminster.

The team were joined for the launch by rugby league icon and pundit Mike 'Stevo' Stephenson, who will be the club's president. Stevo was a member of the 1972 World Cup winning England rugby team and now is a fans favourite commentator for Sky Sports.

The forming of the club follows an inaugural game at Headingley, when the first ever politicians rugby league team took to the field, captained by Greg Mulholland, playing in his own constituency.

The Political Animals comprise of parliamentarians, councillors and political staff from all political parties. The team are sponsored by the Co-operative Group, the UK's largest mutual retailer based in Manchester, as a further extension of their commitment to Rugby League in the UK, The Co-operative will be supporting the Political Animals throughout the club's inaugural 2010 season.

Commenting, Greg, who plays left wing for the Animals, said:

"I am delighted that we have formed this new club which as well as being a chance to play alongside fellow politicians, also gives us a great way to promote the fantastic sport of rugby league.

"We are looking forward to the 2010 season and I am sure there will be no shortage of teams wanting to play against us!"

"Scoring at Headingley was of course a dream for me, I now have to follow that up with more tries for the Animals in future games."

Political Animals club president Mike Stephenson added:

"I am pleased to be here in London for the launch of the Political Animals rugby league team. This is a great new team for the sport; I am honoured to be the club president.

"The Political Animals will bring more and more politicians and MP's into the game making them aware of the enjoyment gained from playing the sport."

Commenting on the partnership, Liz Matkin, The Co-operative Group's Head of Sponsorship said:

"We are proud to be supporting this new political Rugby League team.

It is a natural expansion of our Rugby League sponsorships and will enable us to be part of the team's success on the pitch. We wish the team well in 2010."
