Following the tragic death of Leeds student Matthew Wilcox, MP for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland, who represents many Leeds students and the Leeds Met Headingley campus, has joined protesters in calling for barriers to be introduces along the river in the name of public safety.
Greg Mulholland has been lobbied by constituents and student groups about this issue and has written to the Environment Agency and also the Leader of Leeds City Council Andrew Carter calling for the introduction of appropriate barriers as well as a concerted effort between the Agency, the Council and local businesses to make the river safer.
Commenting Greg said:
"Matthew's death is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family at this very difficult time.
"As there have been similar tragedies in the past, there is clearly a problem here, so all parties involved have a responsibility to ensure the section of river that runs through the city centre is made safer and do all they can to prevent any other tragedies of this kind."
