Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West has written to Home Secretary, Alan Johnson demanding immediate action to stop unlicensed selling of Mephedrone.
Mephedrone has been in the news following the tragic deaths of Louis Wainwright and Nicholas Smith but Greg had been made aware of its sale within the constituency earlier this week.
Police have found teenagers in North Leeds carrying the legal drug and flyers have been distributed around Leeds University advertising the sale of the drug for £10 per gram approx.
Commenting, Greg said:
"I am really very worried that this drug, which whether it is legal or not has claimed lives, should be apparently so prevalent in Leeds.
"I have written to the Home Secretary asking that the police are given more powers to control the distribution of this substance and that those selling it without a license are subject to the full weight of the law.
"There needs to be a proper review of this substance and with concerns about it being dangerous, it may well need to be banned."
