Commenting on the new expenses rules announced by Sir Ian Kennedy's Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa), Greg Mulholland, who has been a leading campaigner for reform of the system in this parliament, said:
"I welcome that we finally have a new system for MPs expenses which I hope will help restore public confidence after the abuses uncovered during the MPs expenses scandal.
"The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority have worked to get this scheme in place for the new parliament and this will make things more transparent.
"However I do think it should have been bolder, I believe they should have taken over accommodation for MPs which would then make sure that the public would be absolutely clear that MPs could not benefit from the system.
"But this new system is clearly more sensible than the old one which was open to abuse and I hope people can start to have the confidence that MPs are only being allowed to claim for the necessary costs of living in London during the week".
