Mulholland Welcomes Decision on Mephedrone but Urges More Action

March 30, 2010 4:19 PM

Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West today questioned Home Office Ministers over the process by which they decided to outlaw the previously "legal high" Mephedrone.

Welcoming the decision Greg also raised issues of enforcing the new law banning the drug.

Commenting later Greg said:

"I am pleased that the Home Secretary has responded to my recent letter about mephedrone and announced that it will be made a class B illegal substance.

"However the Home Secretary should have been able to take this decision weeks ago if he had not meddled in independent scientific advice because he did not like what it said.

"I also want to know what can be done now to stop the unlicensed selling that is going on now. We need clear guidance to the police, parents, schools and student unions about how to deal with this substance before the ban comes in".

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
