Mulholland Calls for Justice for Victims Families

April 13, 2010 3:18 PM

Liberal Democrat campaigner for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, has written to the Foreign Secretary David Milliband following the tenth anniversary of the murder of Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight who were killed while supporting Leeds United in Istanbul.

In the letter, below, Greg demands that Mr Milliband put pressure on the Turkish authorities to bring the killers to justice.

Please see letter below:

Rt Hon David Miliband

King Charles Street

London

SW1A 2AH

9th April 2010

I am writing to you as a Leeds MP about the ongoing fight for justice for Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight, the two Leeds United fans who were brutally murdered in Turkey 10 years ago.

Whilst neither Chris nor Kevin's families are constituents of mine, this is a huge issue for all Leeds United fans and Leeds as a city. So I wish to add my full support to the fight for justice by the two men's families, the families' MPs, Leeds United Football Club, Leeds United Supporters Club and the Yorkshire Evening Post who are backing this important campaign for justice.

It is now ten years since these two family men were brutally murdered simply because of the football club they support, and yet despite four Turkish men being found guilty in 2007, all were quickly released pending appeals that have yet to be heard.

This is a matter of great pain not only to the two men's families, but also to everyone associated with Leeds United and the city of Leeds. Justice must be done in this case and this must be delayed no longer. So I am writing to ask you to do everything that you and the Foreign Office can do, to bring your full influence to bear with the Turkish authorities, to bring justice in this case.

It is time that the callous murderers of these two men finally pay for their crimes, so that justice is done at last which will bring some comfort to the families, though it will never take away the pain of their great loss nor the sense of sorrow and anger that there still is in Leeds as a result of the awful events of that night ten years ago.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Greg Mulholland

Member of Parliament for Leeds North West

If you are a resident of the Leeds North West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
