Leading Liberal Democrats both nationally and locally have expressed their disappointment and anger at David Cameron's decision to table three motions in Parliament revoking or annulling vital aspects of the Town and Country Planning Act.
The Act was intended to protect community balance and stop unscrupulous landlords from converting large numbers of family homes into Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and to protect occupants of already established HMOs from being abused by unscrupulous landlords.
Cameron's motion comes just after the British Landlords Association launched a campaign to have the legislation revoked.
Greg said:
"This legislation prevented landlords from abusing their tenants and also from converting family homes into Houses of Multiple Occupation without consulting the local community, all perfectly sensible measures so I am not sure why David Cameron has come out against them.
It is clear that the Tories have not changed. They are still backing their big business paymasters - in this case the landlords, rather than long suffering residents and students."
Lib Dem Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) says:
"This is a kick in the teeth for university towns across the country. I have been campaigning on this issue since I was elected eight years ago.
"This legislation was beneficial to everyone, even the overwhelming majority of landlords who conduct their business honestly, by signalling his intention to take the side of corrupt landlords should he come to power, David Cameron is sending a powerful message about the integrity of any future Conservative Government."
