Greg and Mike Edwards toast their success with a pint
Despite the uncertainty surrounding last week's General Election result, one clear winner did emerge - local beer. Following a campaign by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), new MPs across the country - and the political spectrum - celebrated their victory with a beer brewed in their constituency rather than Champagne imported from France.
In Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland increased his majority and headed for the pub and a pint from new brewery WharfeBank. New Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, was pictured on the front page of his local paper with a glass of beer from Milton Brewery. Eric Ollerenshaw MP won Lancaster & Fleetwood for the Conservatives and celebrated with the aptly-named 'True Brew' from Fuzzy Duck Brewery. Other SIBA brewers who supplied beer to their local candidates, and secured local press coverage as a result, included: Ascot Ales, Surrey; Bay Brewery, Torquay; Loddon Brewery, Reading; Arbor Ales, Bristol; Ramsgate Brewery; Hawkshead Brewery, Cumbria and Buxton Brewery.
Commenting, Greg said;
"It has bee a privilege to be in a position to fight for the future of the brewing industry in Britain over the past five years and I can not think of a more fitting way to celebrate getting re-elected than with a pint of real ale.
"Thanks to WharfeBank for supplying the firkin which I can assure you was enjoyed by myself and my team as we toasted a great result."
SIBA Chairman Keith Bott, said,
"The suggestion that new MPs should celebrate with a local beer instead of Champagne clearly struck a chord with many of them and with the newspapers and radio stations covering their election. It has been a great success in raising the profile of our member breweries."
He added, "We hope that this will be the start of a continuing dialogue between local MPs and their local brewers, who employ local people and make a valuable contribution to their local economy and community."
