Mulholland Asks PM to look into deportations to Baghdad

June 9, 2010 5:00 PM

MP for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland today asked that the Prime Minister, David Cameron, looked into ending the practice of deporting asylum seekers to dangerous regions, following reports that 10 Iraqis were set to be deported from the UK to Baghdad tomorrow.

Following the invasion of Iraq by the previous Government and despite the success of the subsequent surge Baghdad remains one of the most dangerous cities in the world and this deportation comes against the advice of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Commenting Greg Said:

"According to the United Nations there are still human rights violations taking place in Iraq.

"The UN has asked that we continue to host asylum seekers from Iraq until they can be returned home in safety, which certainly isn't the case now.

"After the shameful legacy of the last Government in which asylum seekers rights seemed to never be taken into account in similar circumstances I hope we can put things right."
