Greg Mulholland MP tabled an Early Day Motion earlier this week expressing concern at the European Parliament's recent decision to reject a traffic light food labelling system that would use red, orange and green colour-coding to indicate nutritional value.
The scheme, which research indicates to be the most transparently informative, would be a critical tool to help consumers make healthy choices as concerns grow regarding obesity-related illness and death.
Commenting Greg said:
"The sole purpose of food labelling regulations should be to make sure that the customer is well-informed about the healthiness of the food they are buying.
"This is increasingly important as obesity rates rise in the UK and across Europe, and a front of package traffic light system is the simplest way to do that.
"It is disheartening to think that the lobbying efforts of large food companies might have swayed the vote of the European Parliament.
"I would urge the European Parliament to reconsider their decision, keeping the health of the people as their utmost concern."
