Following the Government's announcement that the family unit at Yarl's Wood Immigration Detention Centre in Bedford is to be closed down, Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West welcomed the move.
Greg had long campaigned for the closure of the centre following the treatment of his then constituent Enid Ruhango who, along with fellow inmate Sophie Odogo, went on hunger strike whilst detained at the detention centre in protest at her treatment.
Commenting Greg said:
"Since Enid and Sophie's hunger strike, the Prison Inspectorate has published damning reports about Yarl's Wood revealing tragic abuses including the forceful separation of children and parents. It should have been closed years ago.
"The centre had come to symbolise all that was wrong with Labour's approach to immigration policy, which treated many innocent people, including children and torture victims, like animals.
"I am delighted the family unit will now be closed for good and hope this marks a new approach to dealing with immigration and asylum generally and improvements to the rest of the Yarl's Wood facility specifically."
