MP calls for end to appeal following withdrawal of scheme

March 4, 2011 4:49 PM

Greg Mulholland MP

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, appearing at the appeal hearing on the application to develop land north of Holt Avenue, has today called for the appeal to be thrown out, given the decision by David Wilson Homes to withdraw their proposed scheme.

The hearing has threatened to descend into confusion and farce as David Wilson Homes, clearly realising they were unlikely to have their proposed scheme granted, decided to withdraw their designs and instead try simply to get outline planning permission for an unspecified development.

Greg Mulholland has also criticised a deal between David Wilson Homes and Leeds City Council to agree to waive costs on the basis of letting the appeal proceed without any actual scheme being proposed.

Greg commented:

"I am astonished that the appeal is continuing, considering the David Wilson Homes have withdrawn their proposed scheme. I believe that the appeal should now be thrown out before any more taxpayers money is wasted on it.

"It is both reprehensible and underhand that they are trying effectively to get planning permission by the back door without even having a scheme in mind for local residents and representatives to comment on.

"There has also been what I regard as a shoddy deal between David Wilson Homes and Leeds City Council to allow the appeal to continue on this basis. It should not, and if David Wilson Homes want to try to get planning permission on this important site, they should have the good grace to come back with a revised scheme and take it through the full planning process, including allowing local residents to comment.

"It is clear that David Wilson Homes only withdrew their proposed scheme because they knew they were likely to lose, so it is vital that more time is given to consider the future of this important area, opposite the historic Adel St John's church and next to a conservation area, I hope this is listened to"
