Member of Parliament for Leeds North West and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, Greg Mulholland, has today, during the 2011 Cask Ale Week, got behind the bar of a local community pub in his constituency, as part of an initiative designed to help MPs better understand the issues faced by pubs.
Greg helped out behind the bar during a lunch time shift at the Tarn pub in Yeadon in his constituency, serving up pints to punters, whilst having the opportunity to hear from staff at the pub about issues they have experienced whilst working in the trade.
Cask Ale Week is a campaign organised by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and Cask Marque, encouraging more people to try real ale and encouraging more pubs to organise real ale events, in a hope of encouraging more trade for pubs.
Mulholland commented:
"It was great to get behind the bar of the fantastic Tarn pub in Yeadon, as part of the Parliamentary Beers Groups initiative to help MPs better understand some of the issues faced by pubs. It was especially pleasing to do this during Cask Ale Week 2011
"As a long time campaigner on pub issues and as chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub group, I am familiar with many of the issues faced by pubs. This was still, however, a great opportunity to hear from the staff at the pub about their views on the problems faced by their pub and the rest of the industry
"Cask Ale week is a great opportunity for pubs to really show off the delights of good real ale to the public. The Tarn pub already does a fantastic job of promoting real ale when it holds its annual beer festival, which I have been lucky enough to attend. I hope by being there this afternoon and pouring a few pints, I was able to convince people to get down to their local pubs and enjoy a pint of our national drink!"
Mike Pedley, the landlord of the Tarn said:
"It is great having our local MP working behind the bar, especially someone like Greg, who has done so much to help out pubs
"It has been a great opportunity to share some of the problems facing not just the Tarn but the industry as a whole. And it saved us an hour's wages!"
