Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, has once again raised concerns with the Safe and Sustainable review of children's congenital cardiac services, during Health Questions in the House of Commons today. He called on the Government to use the opportunity presented by the delay caused by the JCPCT appeal against last year's judicial review decision, which called on the review to be 'quashed', to reconsider including children in the scope of the upcoming review of adult congenital cardiac services.
The Safe and Sustainable Review is currently in limbo, as the JCPCT is appealing against last year's judicial review decision which called for the Review to be 'quashed'. Their appeal was originally meant to be heard this week, but as a result of a counter-appeal by the Royal Brompton Hospital it won't be heard until sometime before April.
Greg commented:
"The opportunity created by the delay in the review process presents the perfect opportunity for the Government to reconsider including children in the scope of the review of adult congenital services. It is nonsensical to subject both child and adult services to separate reviews, especially when we consider that the two are often treated by the same consultants.
"It is vital that a decision of this importance takes in to consideration the wider picture, including other services offered at the hospitals. When we take into account the knock on effects any change in adult services would have on child services and vice-versa, it is so important a more joined-up process is undertaken to ensure this is considered before any final decision is made.
"The Leeds unit provides an invaluable service to the whole region and it is vital we keep pushing to keep children's heart surgery in Leeds."
