Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland has today, during the statement from Secretary of State for Transport Justine Greening, on High Speed Two, called on the Minister to make sure that the legislation drafted will not only ensure that the building of phase 2 of the project to Yorkshire is guaranteed, including that both legs of the 'Y' will be built at the same time, but that is will also include guarantees that this will be completed no more than the maximum six years after the completion of phase one, as currently proposed.
HS2 is set to bring significant benefits to Yorkshire and the surrounding region and has lead to a considerable cross-party campaign from MPs and private businesses, who have been pushing to see the line come to Yorkshire.
The Government have confirmed today that phase one of the High Speed Two line, from London to Birmingham will go ahead. Greg however sought assurances from the Minister that the legislation on the second phase of the line, which will take the form of a 'Y' shape to the North West and North East of England, will include assurances that this will take place within the planned maximum six years, following the completion of phase one.
Greg Mulholland commented:
"As a Leeds MP I am pleased that the Government have given the go ahead today for the first phase of the high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham. This is the first stage in the process of linking London and the North with high speed rail
"This has been a long and hard fought campaign and has brought together cross party MPs and private businesses, all putting forward the extremely strong case for high speed rail linking Leeds and London. It is vital this now continues to ensure Yorkshire is able to reap the significant benefits a high speed rail line from Leeds to London will bring, as soon as possible
"It is vital now that the Governments legislation is drafted to not only guarantee the second phase of the project and confirm that they will construct both legs of the proposed 'Y' shape line simultaneously, but also that the construction of the 'Y' shape takes no longer that the proposed maximum of six years following the completion of phase one.
"Following this announcement the campaign to see the line brought to Yorkshire will continue to push to ensure that it is constructed as soon as possible and most definitely within the six year maximum that has been proposed"
