Mulholland tables Parliamentary motion in support of Accessible Leeds

January 20, 2012 9:30 AM

Greg Mulholland MPMember of Parliament for Leeds North West and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Paediatric Mobility Reform Greg Mulholland, has today tabled an EDM in support of 'Accessible Leeds', a new campaign and website which provides information on wheelchair and mobility in the city. Accessible Leeds has been set up by Leeds teenager and Whizz-Kidz ambassador, Nathan Popple, a constituent of Greg's in Leeds North West.

Nathan, who is 14 years old and has cerebral palsy, visits shops, restaurants and other attractions around Leeds, rating them on their accessibility for those with mobility issues. This is then posted on the website.

Greg has tabled the EDM welcoming the Accessible Leeds initiative and commending Nathan's work as well as recognising the difficulties many people with mobility issues have in accessing public places across the country.

Greg commented:

"As the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Paediatric Mobility Reform, I am aware of the difficulties people with mobility issues face in gaining access too many public places.

"Accessible Leeds is a fantastic initiative which I am sure will prove extremely useful for people with mobility issues, as well as highlighting the need for many shops and restaurants to improve access for disabled people.

"I am very proud that Nathan has set this up and wish him and Accessible Leeds the best of luck with his campaign and will do what I can to raise these issues locally and nationally".

Nathan Popple said:

"I am really excited that Greg Mulholland is supporting my website and cause for a more accessible world.

"I feel that some businesses fail to consider people such as me by not giving me the chance to enter their properties as, even though I do have disabilities, I should be able to go to all of the places that my friends do.

"I am so pleased that my MP is supporting Accessible Leeds and I hope that many people will also now support the campaign."

Jess Bool, Ambassador Club Manager said:

"Nathan's website - and hard work - auditing the accessibility of Leeds is indicative of the passion and commitment of the young people that Whizz-Kidz encounters daily.

"Young disabled people want to make a difference, they want to make things better for their communities, and they are determined to work with local businesses and politicians to improve towns and neighbourhoods for everybody. We applaud Nathan - he's a fantastic Ambassador."

END

The EDM:

That this House welcomes the launch of the 'Accessible Leeds' website by Leeds teenager and Whizz-Kidz Ambassador Nathan Popple, a website providing information to the people of Leeds on wheelchair and mobility access across the city; notes the work that Nathan has put in visiting shops, restaurants and other attractions in the city rating them on how wheelchair friendly they are; recognises the difficulties faced by those who are wheel-chair users in accessing many public places; calls on more people to contribute to the campaign by highlighting locations where they have faced issues and wishes him and all those who follow his good example the best of luck in expanding his website and pushing forward the campaign for better wheelchair and mobility access across the country.
