Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, former Liberal Democrat older people's spokesman and Co-Chair of the Ageing and Older People APPG Greg Mulholland, has today tabled a parliamentary motion welcoming Age UK's latest campaign 'Care in Crisis, which calls on the Government to reform the care system to ensure people in later life receive high quality care and support. Greg has previously called on the Prime Minister to welcome the campaign during Prime Minister Question Time.
Currently many older people who require care and support are being let down by the system in place, whilst others have to sell their possessions, including their homes, in order to fund the care that they cannot live without.
With the Government due to release a White Paper in the Spring, the EDM calls on the Government to use this as an opportunity to create a sustainable care and support system in which everyone who needs care receives it and is treated with the respect they deserve.
Greg said:
"Without doubt one of the most important issues we face today is ensuring high quality care and support care for older people, which they have worked for and deserve. As a Co-Chair of the Ageing and Older People APPG, I am fully aware of the serious questions relating to the current care system, and there must be reform to resolve these.
"It is wrong that under that system, those who require care are being completely let down, and to hear of people having to sell their homes in order to fund the care that they desperately require is extremely concerning.
"This campaign is a fantastic platform for people to call on the Government to guarantee that people in later life have access to the support and high quality care that they need and deserve; the white paper, due out in the spring, is an important opportunity to make these much needed reforms."
Hilary Evans, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns at Age UK commented:
"Reform of the care system is the most pressing issue and our window of opportunity improve the older people's care is now. We're very grateful to Greg for tabling this EDM asking the Government to meet the calls of Age UK's campaign and create a sustainable care and support system. We urge politicians from across the House to sign their names to it"

The EDM
That this House acknowledges that the current system of care and support is in crisis with many of those who need help and support being badly let down by a faltering system; therefore calls on the Government to meet the calls of Age UK's Care in Crisis Campaign and ensure they use the forthcoming White Paper to create a sustainable care and support system in which everyone who needs care receives it and is treated with the respect they deserve'
