Member of Parliament for Leeds North West Greg Mulholland has today met with the England Rugby Union squad, at a special open training session at the Leeds University training ground at Weetwood, in the constituency. The squad are training at the West Park Rugby Club all week, ahead of the opening round of Six Nations games next weekend.
The squad, besides their week's training at West Park in Bramhope, have also run training sessions for children there, as well as one in Otley.
Greg, who plays both codes of the game, including for the Commons and Lords Rugby Union team, and champions rugby union alongside other sports in Parliament, met with the interim England coach, Stuart Lancaster, who is a constituent of Greg's in Headingley. Greg also met some of the squad, who are fighting for a starting place in England's opening fixture against Scotland at Murrayfield next Saturday.
Greg commented:
"It is absolutely fantastic to have the England Squad preparing for this year's Six Nations here in Leeds North West, and I was delighted to get down to their open training session at Weetwood sports ground today to meet some of the team.
"It was great to have a chat with the interim head coach Stuart Lancaster, who was involved at Leeds Carnegie for many years as the academy coach and as director of rugby. He actually still lives in Headingley and is a constituent of mine!
"The decision to hold their pre-Six Nations training camp here has proven a great success and praise must go to Stuart, who decided to bring the team to Leeds rather than the usual camp they hold out in Portugal. I wish the whole team the best of luck in the upcoming Six Nations; I'm sure that under Stuart's leadership they will put up a strong fight and look to emulate the success of last year's competition."
