Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, has today welcomed the ruling by a judge at the High Court, in the case of constituent Roseline Akhalu, that she should be released from detention immediately, the removal of the deportation order set for June 7th and that UKBA refrain from harassing her until her appeal on July 24th.
Mr Mulholland is writing to the Home Secretary to bring the case to her attention and to raise grave concerns with how the case has been dealt with, describing it as a farce, as despite having being granted an appeal, a judge had previously indicated that UKBA could continue to seek Roseline's deportation. This has led to unnecessary detention, transportation and a considerable wasted cost to the taxpayer. Roseline has been held in various detention centers since being detained by UKBA on 16th May, despite having an appeal hearing date set for July 24th.
Roseline's lawyers and MP have also raised serious concerns about the treatment of Ms Akhalu.
The latest decision, by a different judge, has been welcomed by Mr Mulholland and all those supporting Roseline in her fight to remain in the UK, to allow her to continue to have access to the medication she requires following life saving surgery. Doctors have made clear that without this medication Roselines life would be at risk.

"It is great news that the judge today has seen sense and ordered a halt to Roselines deportation order. The initial decision by the judge to allow for UKBA to continue proceedings to have Roseline deported despite granting her an appeal hearing was farcical and this has not only led to considerable distress for her, but also a huge waste of money to the taxpayer.
"It is only right that she is immediately released from detention until her appeal on July 24th, and with the possibility of her case being reviewed, she should never have been detained in the first place.
"I will be writing to the Home Secretary to ask why, despite being granted an appeal hearing, the judge thought it acceptable to allow UKBA to continue harassing Roseline and continue to seek her deportation from the UK. As well as the distress caused, this has been a farce and has wasted considerable amounts of taxpayers' money. The system clearly needs to be looked at so this cannot happen".
