Leeds NW Labour should admit regret for inviting shamed MP Jared O’Mara to be their guest of honour at recent dinner and back calls for the whip to be removed from him

Leeds Lib Dems have called on Leeds North West MP Alex Sobel and his local Labour Constituency party to issue a statement of regret after they invited Jared O'Mara to Leeds to be their guest speaker at a recent constituency dinner. They should also back calls for the whip to be removed from the shamed MP.

The event advertised Jared O'Mara as "witty and entertaining". It is questionable how many people still think Mr O'Mara is witty and entertaining after he was revealed to be the author a string of misogynistic and homophobic remarks online.

He is also no fan of our fine city. He called Leeds residents' "a bunch of rugby lovin' c***"

Leader of the Liberal Democrat Council Group Stewart Golton said: "While many local residents would happily refer to themselves as "rugby lovin" the final part of Mr O'Mara's statement on Leeds is clearly hugely offensive. "

"The worrying thing is that the comment about Leeds are actually less offensive than many of the other views Mr O'Mara has espoused. I'm sure Mr Sobel's constituents will be completely horrified by the vile comments Jarad O'Mara made about women and gay people."

"This is why it's important that Mr Sobel immediately backs calls for the MP to be stripped of the Labour party whip. It's also important Leeds North West Labour issue a statement of regret for inviting Mr O'Mara to be their guest of honour at their annual dinner."
